Sustainable TRENZ
New Zealand’s natural environment is the main reason visitors come here. It plays a major part in domestic leisure travel, and forms the basis for thousands of tourism businesses. We must protect and enhance our environment for the enjoyment of future generations, and future visitors.

Sustainable Event
The Tourism Industry Association wishes to lead the way in promoting environmental sustainability which follows the principles of the Draft New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 that sets out the vision for the tourism sector to take a leading role in protecting and enhancing the environment.
TRENZ 2010 environmental policy
In organising TRENZ 2010, we will encourage our suppliers, Exhibitors, Buyers, Media and visitors to adopt sound environmental practices that will reduce waste, conserve energy and other resources.
What is happening to make TRENZ 2010 a sustainable event?
- TIA is working to identify new sustainability practices with our suppliers that can be implemented at TRENZ 2010. Some of the practices implemented in 2009 were:
- Using regionally sourced ingredients for all the meals
- Reducing the use of disposable plates, cups, utensils by using innovative ways of delivering food to delegates (edible chocolate cups, shortbread plates, etc)
- Reducing the amount of meat served by offering vegetarian entrees only and having a vegetarian option available for mains
- Recycling paper, plastic and cardboard. Our caterers collected all glass bottles at the end of each function and had these recycled
- Reducing onsite waste by prefabricating 98% of work for display purposes
- Use of biodegradable water cups
- Media releases were only accepted in an online format
- Use of cloth napkins instead of paper napkins
- We recycle name badges and lanyards, and ask to return these to the main registration desk at the conclusion of TRENZ
- We will be looking to use recyclable polypropylene delegate packs again in 2010
- We will provide all related pre-event manuals to Exhibitors and Buyers as an online PDF to reduce paper usage
- We will print the Exhibitor and Buyer Directories provided onsite at TRENZ 2010 on recycled paper stock using vegetable-based inks
- We aim to reduce the paper and documentation that is taken to TRENZ 2010
- We encourage Exhibitors to bring less material to TRENZ via communications pre-event
- We will provide detailed information on recycling stations for ease of use for all delegates
- We encourage delegates to use the group coach transport provided to and from the TRENZ 2010 hotels and the ASB Showgrounds, as well as to off-site functions
- Our signage is reusable
- At TRENZ 2010 Buyers will receive a CD folder which can be couriered back via the McLaren Document Dispatch. This in turn will give the Exhibitors the opportunity to provide the Buyers with CDs rather than brochures
- Booth Acceptances, invoices, communications in general (e.g. TRENZ tips) are only sent electronically
